Overview

Sum Hou Bak Kut Teh at their Hartamas branch is a standout destination for bak kut teh enthusiasts seeking authentic Chinese flavors nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Located on Jalan 22a/70a in Desa Sri Hartamas, this unassuming eatery offers a cozy, inviting atmosphere with simple décor that evokes nostalgia through its charming collectibles, reflecting a deep connection to traditional roots.

The menu centers firmly around bak kut teh, with highlights including the robust dry bak kut teh and the richly flavored vinegar pork trotter dish. The soup here strikes a fine balance—thick and hearty without overwhelming herbal notes—allowing the natural richness of tender pork, pork stomach, and intestines to shine through, as noted by many patrons. This mastery extends beyond the signature dishes to include complementaries such as otak-otak, enoki mushrooms, and fresh vegetable offerings. For those who enjoy variety, the trio of rice choices adds a pleasant flexibility to the meal, enhancing the overall dining experience.

The space offers a friendly, homey feel with attentive service that is prompt when not overwhelmed by crowds. Though parking can pose a challenge in this busy neighborhood, it rarely deters devoted visitors from making the trip. The target audience ranges from local food lovers craving authentic comfort food to tourists eager to explore Malaysia’s rich culinary heritage in a genuine setting.

While the flavors resonate deeply with aficionados seeking an honest taste of Chinese pork broth cuisine, some diners have noted room for improvement—particularly in how accompaniments like chili and garlic are served. Nonetheless, those looking for quality meats and a well-crafted, flavorful broth will find Sum Hou Bak Kut Teh a rewarding experience worth repeated visits.

We’re tourists, and this is exactly the kind of local eatery I was looking for, authentic flavors and a cozy, homey feel. The place is spotless, and the service is wonderfully friendly. We feel so lucky to have found this gem! I loved the dry bak kut teh and the spicy stir-fried lala. Absolutely delicious!

Great option for Bak Kut Teh in the Hartamas/Mont Kiara area. The broth is rather thick but very balanced in terms of flavours. Not too herbal and not too bland. Meat quality is good and they also serve fresh veggies. Service is prompt but it can take a bit longer for the dishes when it’s crowded. Parking can be a bit tricky but always found one so far.

In my quest for Bak Kut Teh around Hartamas, this spot pleasantly surprised me. The pork meat is tender coupled with the pork stomach and intestines, impeccably clean with no lingering odour. The Otak-Otak was flavorful. The trio of rice choices offers a nice touch. Beyond Bak Kut Teh, their menu unveils a delightful array of well-cooked dishes. The place has a simple decor, adorned with charming collectibles from days gone by, giving a nostalgic touch.

I was craving for Bakuteh one of my fave Chinese food. Dropping by at Sum Hou Bakuteh in Hartamas. Although looking for a parking was quite difficult. Their Bakuteh was worth the wait. Meat were plentiful and broth was flavourful. One of the best Bakuteh I have had.. A must-try...

Bak Kut Teh was above average, but the soup was only average. They serve the chilli with the raw garlic. Fact is I only take raw garlic with black thick sauce. They should not assume and just serve the chillies and garlic separately for us to choose ourselves. Ask for garlic only and the lady boss thot we want more garlic in the soup won't let go of the precious garlic. Had to prise it from her hands. Not coming back.
